Tech School Tuition School to Work Program for graduating seniors

Good afternoon,

My name is Rogene Smith and I am the Director of Human Resources for a local manufacturer in Omaha. www.conductix.us I have your emails because I am part of the National Association of Manufacturer’s Dream It Do It committee. I thought you would be equipped to help me get this into the hands of the right guidance counselors, tech instructors, graduating seniors and their parents.

We have currently committed to finding a student who is interested in pursuing a career in Machine Tool and Die technology. Typically this is an 18 month program. We are offering this opportunity because we are finding it increasingly hard to find this skill in the metro area. We have decided to seek out student’s who like to work with their hands, are good at math, want a focused path from school to work and are looking for a solid company to help them with the cost of tuition, fees and books in return for working for us for 3 years after they graduate.

I have attached the program outline and the application. Please pass this along to the appropriate personnel in your organizations or send me their contact information so I can discuss this program with them directly.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Rogene Smith

Scholarships available for Big Red “Entrepreneurship” Camp

High school students interested in exploring entrepreneurship should plan to attend the upcoming Big Red “Entrepreneurship” Camp, June 13-17, 2011.  Scholarships in the amount of $300 are available to 16 campers who enroll in the Entrepreneurship Camp.  Enroll by April 1 today to secure a spot!

To qualify for the scholarship, each camper is required to submit two short essays and pay the up-front cost of the camp upon registration.  Scholarships will then be awarded to campers when they attend the Entrepreneurship camp.  Additional information about the scholarship requirements is available at:  http://4h.unl.edu/web/4hcamps/campfinance

Come, learn and grow!  During the five-day camp, campers will address in-depth entrepreneurship skills such as creativity, innovation, research analysis, customer engagement, marketing and sales.  They will learn from professionals on how to best navigate the start-up process and practice skills from concept creation to closing the sell.  Throughout the week, individuals and teams will compete for prizes, including which team creates the best TV commercial and feasibility concept.

Hosted by the Paul Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program, the Entrepreneurship Camp is part of the 2011 Big Red Academic Camps.  These career exploration camps are a chance for campers to explore the UNL campus, meet people from across the country, spend time investigating an interest or potential career and have lots of fun.  For more information about the different camps and to register for the Entrepreneurship camp, visit http://bigredcamps.unl.edu or contact Marilyn Schlake, Camp Director at 402.472.4138, mschlake@unl.edu. The early bird registration deadline is April 1.

New MCC Academies

Subject: New MCC Academies

Good morning! Metro has 2 brand new academies next yearthat are being offered that might be of interest to some of your students…….this is just a FYI incase any of your students are looking for additional courses:

Introduction to the Trades/Manufacturing/Internship
The best way to introduce students to the Manufacturing Trades is to let them experience it. We are offering an internship to the manufacturing trades and classes to prepare them to enter at the basic level. This includes classes on safety, hand and power tools, measurement, and obtaining familiarity with industrial equipment.

Residential Energy Management
In this course the students will learn the theory, methods, and techniques for installation of weatherization materials. It will also focus on demonstration and hands-on application of weather-stripping (air sealing), insulation, mechanical ventilation, caulking and door and window installation. Students will further learn about blower doors, combustion safety, building science, safety and hand/power tools.

Robotics League Play

Coaches,

LEAGUE PLAY IS HERE! Thanks to the generous support of Metropolitan
Community College, the Omaha area will now have FREE League Play events
on November 20th, December 4th and January 15th. In anticipation of
sufficient interest at the middle and high school levels we are breaking
league play into two Leagues, High Tech (High School) and Mid Continent
(Middle School). There are separate registration event pages for each
league and each date. Please make sure you understand the following
before registering:

1) Registration does NOT guarantee participation. Since we don't know
for sure how many teams at each level will be interested in
participating we ask that you sign up any/all your interested teams for
as many dates as you would like with the understanding that if we have
more participation that we can handle we will inform you of which
dates/teams will be guaranteed a spot. We will work with all
schools/programs to ensure equal access for all teams. Thank you in
advance for your understanding and patience.

2) Registration will open on November 2nd and CLOSE on November 14th FOR
ALL EVENTS. We need time to plan/organize and to potentially even out
access. To do so we will need to know your intend for ALL 3 events by
the 14th. Unlike other event registrations registering first will not
be an advantage. We will work with every team that registers by the
cutoff to have equal access.

3) One adult/coach may bring a maximum of 2 teams per event. So if you
have 4 teams coming from your school be sure to recruit another adult to
act as their coach for the day. This is required because coaches will
be responsible for taking turns being match officials. If you have too
many teams to keep track of you will not be able to fulfill this role.

4) Students/coaches will be required to help with setup and cleanup. In
order for us to keep these events free for all, all will need to
assist. Detailed written instructions will be given to each team at
registration. So be sure to get to the events early and leave enough
time for cleanup at the end of the event!

5) Read all docs attached. They give very valuable insights on how the
league events will be run.

6) League standings will be kept and published on MCC's website, and the
Omaha World Herald Online Edition.

7) League Champions in each of five categories (Driver Skills,
Programming Skills, Head-to-Head, Overall team, Overall School) will
qualify for the U.S. National Robotics Championship on March 10th-12th.
