Opportunity with UNO involving Marketing and Programming

October 1st from 5:30-7:30

Nebraska Research Initiative Project called Project MATTERS (Mobile Applications Transforming Teaching, Engagement and Research for Students). As you know, the project will seek to develop a prototype mobile application for both the Nebraska Strategic Air and Space Museum - SASM (Year 1) and the Henry Doorly Zoo (Year 2). Once we have the process down, and an app development well underway and refined, we will turn our attention to the Zoo effort. Both phases will be a collaborative effort between UNO students and faculty, UNL 4H Extension, and selected students and teachers from Papillion-La Vista Schools.

For the first museum effort, we had several quick rounds of conversations today, and we have settled on Monday, October 1st, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, at the SASM. We would like you to participate if at all possible for this first brainstorming meeting. If desired, the high school teachers can also bring a few students if you would like (please limit to just a few for this meeting).

The plan for the evening of October 1st is to primarily use the two hour time frame to walk around the museum for a bit first, and then to brainstorm mobile app ideas. These ideas would be recorded (either by paper or on an electronic form). The leadership group will then take these ideas back and decide a bit more on the initial parameters of the project. We will also of course often defer to the IS&T team on what is feasible, as well as what might work best from technical perspective, etc.

Building mistake in China

YES, IT'S An ENTIRE 13- STORY BUILDING IN CHINA

LYING ON THE GROUND.
[Description: cid:A73ABFC409344EFDB7434AB1A570D187@JaikPC]
(1) An underground garage was being dug on the south
Side of the building, to a depth of 4.6 meters (15 ft).

(2) The excavated dirt was being piled up on the north
Side of the building, to a height of 10 meters (32 ft).

(3) They dug right up to the base of the building.
Then the rains came.

(4) The building experienced uneven lateral pressure
From north to south.
(5) This resulted in a lateral pressure of 3,000 tons,
Which was greater than what the un-reinforced pilings
Could tolerate. Thus, the building toppled completely
Over in a southerly direction.
[Description: cid:FE090E877FB64DE08C944426418F11A6@JaikPC]
*First, the apartment building was constructed.*
[Description: cid:DB8FDA35415B42C2950538F2BD505AAA@JaikPC]
Then the plan called for an underground garage to be dug out.
The excavated soil was piled up on the other side of the building.
[Description: cid:4F8D62CB915B4B99B77B95A18A33D91D@JaikPC]
*Heavy rains resulted in water seeping into the ground.*
[Description: cid:FB885488397142188970D8971234F205@JaikPC]
The building began to tilt.
Then it began to shift, and the "hollow" concrete pilings
were snapped due to the uneven Lateral pressures.
[Description: cid:65F3148D50E34DF4BEDF7CFDAC591461@JaikPC]
And thus was born the eighth wonder of the world.
[Description: cid:D239807097F645D897133DD419E8E3E2@JaikPC]
If these buildings were closer together, It would have resulted in a domino effect.
[Description: cid:05A61A84F9D4443A86A4A33D52B9495B@JaikPC]

[Description: cid:DBBBED25EADD488984B8CB77878A64B2@JaikPC]
Notice that there's NO rebar in the pilings! Just some wire mesh.
[Description: cid:E69F532CD7F74CF7AA744DD4C086E6C4@JaikPC]

[Description: cid:8DE91FBFE6894D658F0A199EC3066733@JaikPC]

They built 13 stories on grade, with no basement,
And tied it all down to hollow pilings with no rebar.

MCC courses and ACE Scholarship

A question regarding the ACE (Access College Early Scholarship) scholarship came up. It was included on the bottom of the 2nd page of the MCC application. I spoke to Pat at MCC. She said that h.s. counselors were informed and trained on this from Neb Dept of Ed. She was not sure if PLSD was included in this conversation.

If parents/students have questions about this NDE program, they should contact a building counselor, or Ritchie Morrow via email at Ritchie.Morrow@nebraska.gov or at 402-471-0032.

Hello all,

Attached is the scholarship application for Academy students who are enrolled in an MCC career academy or PLSD courses taught by MCC adjunct instructors.  Please provide a paper or e-copy of this application to your MCC students and remind them that the due date is August 31st

I know some of you do not have a list of the students who have chosen to take your course for college credit.  I know the A2B student list is still coming together, but if there are others, please let me know.

Thanks.

Tony,

Good afternoon. I hope all is going well. I just wanted to get the word out that Conductix-Wampfler will pay the education of a student that wants to attend Milford’s Tool and Die program.  I am attaching the program details and application.

Can you get this into the hands of all Nebraska Educators and Counselors?

Thanks for your help.
