Dear High School Councelors and Teachers,

Daily you interact with students who are on a path of exploring their passions and interests. The College of Architecture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln offers a summer workshop that may appeal to students who show an interest in art, design, and industrial technology. If you have students who may be contemplating a degree or career in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or Interior Design, but want more information on those professions, our summer workshop may offer them more insight. Below is information on our annual workshop.

If you have a student or students who would may be interested in this camp, please feel free to pass on the information. Application materials are due April 5, 2013, and can be found here: http://architecture.unl.edu/programs/arch/hs_workshop.shtml.

General Information
Summer Workshop June 9 - June 15, 2013

What Is It?
This workshop, developed for high school students, provides a unique experience to investigate issues surrounding design and learn more about the design professions of architecture, landscape architecture and interior design. The workshop provides learning opportunities in the form of design studio explorations, seminars and discussions, field trips and video presentations. The central focus of the workshop is a design studio where design issues are explored and creative energies are nurtured. As part of the workshop students will visit professional offices, learn about various career opportunities, and develop fundamental skills necessary for the study of design.
Who Can Participate?
Students who have completed two or more years of their high school education and have an interest in architecture, landscape architecture or interior design are encouraged to apply. You do not need courses in art or drafting in order to participate. Applicants will be selected on the basis of a review of materials submitted with the application procedure. We have reserved space for 36 students in the workshop.
How Much Will It Cost?
The fee for the workshop is $585 per participant. This includes studio supplies, program fees, meals and lodging. Students participating in this residential program are supervised overnight while in the residence hall by College of Architecture staff.
How Do I Apply?
Each applicant must completely fill out the application form and provide two recommendations on the provided form from persons (other than family members) familiar with the applicant’s academic and creative ability. In addition, each applicant is to submit a 500 word essay which describes why you are interested in architecture, landscape architecture and/or interior design and why you wish to attend the workshop. Please be specific.
All application material must be received by the College of Architecture office on or before April 5, 2013. Those who are accepted must confirm attendance by submitting the $585 fee on or before May 13th. Those students not confirming by the deadline will be replaced by an alternate applicant.

Thank you for your consideration in sharing this with your students. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

WiSTEM Camp for Papillion/La Vista

Randy,

For now, we would like students interested in the STEM areas (science, technology, engineering, and math) to just write down their names and emails, so we can keep both you and the students aware of the upcoming events. We will probably take around 30 students due to classroom and lab size, and we would like you to stress that if they would like to participate, that they agree to attend all four sessions (one per month). Each month will host a project and a speaker from each STEM area, so we would like to have a variety of female students interested in the different STEM fields. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Thank you,

WiSTEM Camp for Papillion/La Vista

Our WiSTEM group would like to pair up with a high school to allow motivated, upper level female students (junior or senior) interested in STEM fields to participate in a camp that will occur next semester once a month at UNO from 10:00am-noon on a Saturday, which has not yet been decided. Each month will host an activity and a speaker in a more advanced topic of STEM that the students wouldn't normally be subjected to at a high school level. We would like the young women to engage in these activities and expose themselves to areas in STEM that young students, especially women, are usually not well educated on but are still great fields to pursue. Our goal is to give them these opportunities so that they can pursue college having confidence in their skills and knowledge about available fields that most young women do not acquire until they reach upper levels of college. We plan on hosting four sessions next semester, and if students sign up, we would like them to make at least three of those sessions. Do you think Papillion/LaVista would have interest in this camp?

Thank you,
