I wanted to send out a Project SHINE-Mission Impossible (SHINE-MI) reminder!

I hope things are going well for you. The reason I’m sending you this message is to ask you to help us enroll students in the Project SHINE academic camp this July. I want to know if you are willing and able to recommend four students for the camp who will enter 9th or 10th grade in fall 2013, respectively.

The Project SHINE-Mission Impossible (SHINE-MI) day camp will take place from July 8-10. SHINE-MI academic day camp is focused on fun and real-world problem-solving where students will participate in hands-on applied STEM activities (missions) during the day.
We are looking to enroll students who enjoy hands-on learning and problem-solving activities. We are especially interested in exposing SHINE-MI to students from your school who you feel have unrealized potential and might not normally be able to afford a 3-day camp.
Camp enrollment is limited to 50 students and applications are due by April 12th. The students that you recommend for SHINE-MI will automatically be enrolled if we receive their completed applications by April 13th. The students that you recommend will also receive full scholarships for the $200 tuition. The scholarships will be awarded to the students on behalf of businesses from Project SHINE and the National Science Foundation.

Hi,

Do you have students interested in InfoTech? It really sounds like a great day. A bus will hold about 40 students and if we can get at least 30 registered prior to 3/21, I will be able to provide a bus for transportation. I’ll be talking to my CBC students again today and see if any are ready to register.

We like to make things complicated, in addition to registering online, we need a print permission form for each student to give permission for photo/video release. Plus each student will need to select a Geek tee shirt and get me the size and color for the shirt. (check here for a description for the type of Geeks http://infotec.org/reveal-your-inner-geek/) You can either write the color/Geek type and size on the permission form or email that to me and I’ll keep track of how many to order.
In addition, we’ll need a permission form that allows the students to ride the bus. The form I typically use includes areas for all teachers to sign saying that it is OK for the student to miss class that day. We can get one form for the kids, but I do need the release of liability for AIM if they are to ride the bus.

Since the registration is due by March 29 and we are on spring break that week, we need to set out registration deadline to March 21. (I’m not in the building on Fridays, however, if you have a student who registers on 3/22, we can make arrangements for me to pick up the forms at the end of the day.)

I will be delighted to come into any classes and talk about this wonderful opportunity if you’d like, just let me know.

(As an aside, encourage the girls to register, it seems that so far only one girl has registered.)

1. Go to www.infotec.org/youth-2013
2. Click on the purple Youth @ Infotec REGISTRATION button.
3. Print off a permission form for each student you've invited to the event. This is the event permission and photo/video release form that we are required to collect as event sponsors. I've also attached the form.
4. Collect the signed permission forms and return to me by March 29. These may be sent by postal mail or scanned/emailed using my contact information below.
5. As educators, please also register yourselves by clicking on the red REGISTER TODAY button in the sidebar. By choosing High School Faculty (this includes administrators and district staff as well) from the drop-down menu under Registration Type, you will be given complimentary admission.

As stated, the event will begin at 8:30 AM. Please make transportation arrangements to arrive with enough time to get signed in and pick up name tags and other conference materials prior to the start of the event. Continental breakfast items will be available at this time as well. The conference will end by 2:00 PM, and schools who need to depart in order to catch after-school buses may leave. If you have extra time, you and your students are invited to walk through the Exhibitors hall and check out the booths.

Youth at INFOTECH 2013

Hi,

The Youth at INFOTECH is scheduled for April 17, 2013 and looks to be more exciting than it was last year. Last year Lisa Alfrey and I took about 15 students from South and they had a fantastic time.

This year I was able to secure a bus just for the Titan Students and we can take up to 40 students. I think I might have 12 to 15 from CBC that are interested, which leaves plenty of space for other students.

If f you could start talking to your students about this wonderful (and free!) opportunity. Based on the schedule, I think we’ll want to leave the school around 8:05 and will return by 2:45. Registration for the conference is free and lunch will be provided.

I’ll have the registration forms soon, we’ll need a couple of forms from each student so that AIM will have a signed photo release for each student to enable them to use photos of any participants for promotional purposes for other youth events. Last year we ended up with some great photos of kids engaged in fun activities and couldn’t use them because we didn’t know the students or have permission.

I think the registration materials will be ready next week or soon thereafter and I’ll forward them.

Keep me posted on the students you think might be interested and if you would like me to visit your classroom and talk about the fun opportunity.

MySites -

MySites for students is the student cloud-based file management system. Students go to the website mysite.paplv.org and if logged into a school computer, it will take them right to the web-based site of their # server folder. They have access to all their files and folders.
If on their home computer, they will need to log in. Simply type in plv\student ID# and password to login at school.

STS Teacher Ed Programs

Greetings,
Whenever I visit with a group of teachers or administrators, it seems like the question of teacher education comes up. There are some great opportunities for students to enter our profession.
There are still two teacher education programs in Nebraska. Wayne State College has a long-standing traditional program.
A new type of program is offered at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. For some history, the folks in Agriculture Education on East Campus volunteered to finish out the students in the program when the College of Education dropped STS (ITE at the time). They soon realized that there is a need to educate teachers in our area. I was able to work with folks from UNL, Southeast Community College and Metro Community College to design the 2+2 program for STS teachers. I have attached a brochure about the program. Basically, a student can spend the first two years being recognized as a UNL student (which means that they can live on campus if they want) but taking technical classes and general education courses at the community college. After two years they will graduate with an Associate’s Degree in Industrial Technology Teaching and then they will finish the last two years at UNL working along-side the agriculture education students to learn the pedagogy. They will then be awarded a Bachelor’s Degree that will allow them to teach STS.
Both schools provide a great opportunity for students to enter into our profession.

Hope you all had a great weekend! The date for CSE Day has officially been moved from Friday, April 5 to Monday, March 25. We hope more students will be able to participate. Attached is a revised letter with additional details. Schools may bring more than one team. Again, we are not doing the design contest this year. The day will consist of the programming contest, lunch, awards ceremony, and optional tour of the Schorr Center. Attached is a letter about CSE Day which is an event put on by the Computer Science & Engineering Department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The main portion of the event revolves around a programming contest. It is okay if your students have limited programming experience. We will not be doing the design contest this year. First and second place winners will receive scholarships. Breakfast, lunch, t-shirts, and giveaways will be provided. Please see the attachment for more details. Registration goes live on February 15.

Info Tech Youth April 17, 2013

The theme for this year’s youth day is “Magic Explained” with lots of cool things going on. As with last year, the registration will be free for high school students and accompanying teachers and lunch will be provided. Some of the sessions include Robotics and NASA, Computer Game Creation and The STEM Magician. I am working to possibly get a bus, which would be shared with the Monarchs.

There will also be a Robotic Competition that will be going on all day and the kids can see on breaks between sessions. There is a small entry fee for teams who wish to enter the competition.

I have two posters in my office that I can share with you, or that can be displayed in a visible place, let me know what you’d like me to do. I’ll have a 3rd poster on my office door.

It sounds exciting and fun!

The greater Omaha chapter (GOC) of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA), a non-profit organization chartered to promote interaction and outreach between government, business and the academic communities. As part of our educational outreach we offer scholarships, science fair awards and grants for local science classrooms.

Please find attached an announcement for our STEM Scholarships that are being offered to high school seniors studying a science, technology, engineering, or math related discipline in college. The maximum scholarship award is $2,000. We are accepting applications now through March 31st for our 2013 awards. Please make sure this announcement is provided to the schools in your district.

UNL Engineering E-Week Announcement

Announcing the Engineering Week Open House at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln

What :  Open House complete with fun hands-on activities, keynote speaker Clayton Anderson, NASA Astronaut,  laboratory tours, and a senior design fair.

When:  Friday, April 12 @ 9 am -3 pm

Where: Othmer Hall (17th and Vine St.)  Lincoln, NE

The E-Week Open House is FREE. All activity materials will be provided, and free parking is available at the west entrance to the old state fair grounds near the Bob Devaney Center. Shuttles will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. between the parking lot and engineering facilities.

Students should pack a lunch or bring $5 to purchase lunch from DaVinci’s.  Additionally, E-Week t-shirts will be sold at $5.
